The Invasions-
Vikings:
As a result:
- By the late ninth century, the Frankish Empire struggled with internal politics for power which led to invasions by Muslims, Hungarian Magyars and Vikings due to which the political authority of Europe then passed on to local and regional jurisdictions.
- Europeans followed a decentralized, feudal type of political organization and government
- In the beginning of the ninth century, three groups of invaders destroyed the Frankish Realm in search of riches stored in towns and monasteries.
- Those three groups were the Muslims, Magyars and Vikings.
- From the south came the Muslims, who attacked towns, villages, churches and monasteries in Mediterranean Europe.
- The invaders also captured Sicily and several territories of Southern Italy and France.
- The Magyars, coming from the east, were descendants of nomadic people from Central Asia who later on settled in Hungary. They overrun settlements in Germany, Italy and Southern France
Vikings:
- From the North came the Vikings, who were the most feared of all the invaders, they began to break in and throw raids in northern France during Charlemagne’s reign.
- The Vikings later on began to establish settlements in the lands that they attacked. They sailed shallow boats that survived along the heavy seas but could also show the way to many rivers providing access to the interior regions of Europe.
As a result:
- Because of constant invasion, England built small kingdoms.
- Germany brought an end to Carolingian rule and formed a more effective state under a new dynasty.
